A BURGLAR who stole antique furniture worth £3,000 from a Hipperholme upholstery specialist has been spared jail.
George Halliday, 27, admitted raiding A and B Antiques in Lees Buildings, Halifax, Road on January 7 and stealing an antique oak cameo chair valued at £2,500 and a Victorian nursing chair worth £500
Police were called by the resident of the flat above the shop, who heard glass smashing at around 10pm and then saw a getaway van speed off.
Halliday, of Park View, Bridlington, was linked to the crime by the broken glass, Calderdale magistrates’ court was told.
The father-of-two, who claimed he had carried out the crime with friends, was sentenced to do 100 hours’ unpaid work.
Magistrates also ordered him to pay £585 towards the cost of the furniture, which was never recovered.
