A 26-year-old man was imprisoned for a total of 14 weeks after admitting to stealing goods from Tesco and Poundland in Halifax.
Prosecutor Lisa Beadle told Calderdale Magistrates Court how Michael Farrar of Union Street, Halifax, stole two steaks and toiletries during two seperate visits to Tesco, and three sachets of dog food and two packets of nuts from Poundland between July 17 and 26.
The court heard how Farrar had 37 offences on his record and had been sent to prison for eight weeks in May for another shoplifting offence.
During the trial Farrar became agitated and sacked his defence counsel moments before the panel retired to consider its verdict.
Chair of Magistrates Sam Shibli told Farrah: “We don’t think you comply with any community orders.”
Farrar was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison for each offence to be served concurrently.
