CLAIMS have been made that Government plans could impose party politics on policing.
West Yorkshire Police Authority is opposing proposals to replace police authorities with directly elected police and crime commissioners.
Chairman Coun Mark Burns-Williamson said: “Police and crime commissioners will be imposed on local communities within each policing area and will be elected to a statutory role covering a very large geographical area.
“We maintain any police governance which has at its centre a single-elected individual represents significant and substantial risks. It will introduce conflict, confusion and cost.”
