Four men accused of being in a gang that targetted a Brighouse shop for £2,000 worth of cigarettes have appeared at Calderdale Magistrates Court.
The court heard that witnesses saw a man prise open the door of the Co-operative store, on Highfield Road, Rastrick, in the early hours of March 24.
Three men then streamed in and filled a duvet cover with cigarettes before loading it in the back of a van and driving away. They were followed by police officers abut pulled into Millroyd Mill apartment block, Brighouse, and fled the vehicles. All four men were arrested after a short chase in a nearby scrap yard.
Billy Kirkby, 22, of East Park Road, Leeds, and James Hawkins, 19, of Sutherland Terrace, Leeds, have pleaded not guilty to an offence of burglary. Jason Jones, 24, of Burmantofts, Leeds, did not indicate a plea. The three men saw the case adjourned for a further hearing on April 2 at Calderdale Magistrates Court. A fourth man, Joshua Wannan, 20, of Amberton Gardens, Leeds, pleaded guilty to the offence but will have to wait until April 22 at Bradford Crown Court to be sentenced.
