A 28-year-old man has been remanded in custody by a judge after a jury found him guilty of a series of sexual offences against a young boy.

Amir Fiaz, of Mayfield Grove, Halifax, had denied the charges during a trial at Bradford Crown Court, but earlier today the jury returned a series of guilty verdicts.

Fiaz was cleared on two allegations of attempted rape, but the jury unanimously convicted him of further offences of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and sexual assault.

It is understood that the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was aged 12 at the time of the offending.

Judge Jonathan Rose said it was appropriate to order a report from the probation service before Fiaz was sentenced, but he told the defendant via an interpreter that he had been found guilty of “persistent and appalling sexual abuse”.

“There will be a prison sentence in your case, but in order for me to assess the length of that sentence I require the assistance of the probation service providing a report on all of your circumstances,” the judge told Fiaz.

Fiaz will be sentenced on January 19 and Judge Rose emphasised that he faced a significant prison sentence.
