A motorist gave chase as a gang of raiders stole a haul of electrical items from a house.

The public spirited have-a-go hero, believed to work at Marshalls in Southowram, followed the gang until they came to an abrupt halt when their Audi was believed to have been involved in a collision with a recycling wagon.

The dramatic scene unfolded after a burglary at Stonelea, Barkisland, on Tuesday at 3pm. A resident is reported to have seen the gang knocking on doors and going round the rear of a property in the village before returning carrying goods.

Police were called and a neighbour gave chase in his car following the black Audi down Stainland Road and up Beestonley Lane into Stainland.

As the gang entered Bowling Green Road the suspects were stumped as they came across a waste lorry parked on one side of the road and cars on the other.

After the 2.5 mile chase it is reported the gang reversed into the following car and the man confronted the gang by banging on a window. They then barged through the space damaging their Audi in the process and travelled at speed through Stainland before turning right into Town Ing Way.

Residents heard the screech of wheels before the Audi was abandoned at the bottom of Town Ing Way. The gang took the keys, locked the doors and a hammer was reportedly seen on a seat.

They fled through gardens and up a steep hillside to be pursued shortly afterwards by police with dogs and helicopter support. They were later rounded-up, and the Audi and stolen items recovered.

Police are also linking the incident to an attempted burglary at Ravenstone Drive in Greetland at 2.30pm.
