A MAN convicted of making a false statement to obtain benefits has appeared before Calderdale Magistrates’ Court for failing to pay his fine.
Michael Robertshaw, 57, of Arncliffe Crescent, Rastrick, was given a seven day prison sentence suspended until he pays the remaining £190 owed.
He was originally ordered to pay £260 to Calderdale Council at a rate of £5 a week but on several occasions failed to pay or paid late.
But he said he spent £15 on cigarettes a week and £10 a week on alcohol.
Robertshaw, who was not represented, said: “I am getting behind with it but I am trying to pay my fine as best I can.”
Magistrates ordered him to pay the debt at the rate of £10 a fortnight.
