Officers in Calderdale are promising to tackle yobs with fireworks this Bonfire Night.

They are urging people that it is an offence for anyone under 18 to possess a firework and say they will be using powers to stop and search people they suspect of being having fireworks illegally.

In the run up to Bonfire Night, officers are also asking parents and guardians to ensure they know where their children are and what they are doing.

Inspector Derrick Oldham, from Halifax Central neighbourhood policing team, said: “Police, the fire service, trading standards officers and all our partners will be working together to tackle the illegal possession and sale of fireworks.

“We will take positive action against those caught, and against anyone suspected of selling them to under 18s.

“Fireworks are there for people to enjoy in the appropriate way and I would ask all parents and guardians to know where your children are and what they are doing.

“I wish all our communities a safe and enjoyable time during the bonfire period.”
