Hospice volunteers were stunned after a thief whipped a blue coat off a mannequin.
It was taken from the Overgate shop in Brighouse around noon on Tuesday while staff were busy serving customers.
Manager Jacqueline Yates said: “It was so blatent and daring it took our breath away.”
It was priced at £12.50 and a potential customer had just tried it on and went off for a coffee to make up her mind on whether to buy it.
Ten minutes later she returned to the shop having decided to buy it and it was then staff noticed it had gone.
The coat was loosely fitted over the mannequin and in future staff will be pinning items to deter thieves from targeting the shop.
The shop is one of several which raises funds for Overgate Hospice at Elland.
