CRIMINALS who try to nab the identity of other people’s vehicles to commit crime are being stopped in their tracks thanks to a spcial device.

Security screws are being handed out by the Lower Valley neighbourhood policing team to drivers in Elland in a bid to stop number plates being stolen.

In just one day, 76 vehicles were secured with the anti-tamper screws.

Police from the team have also been giving motorists tips on how to keep their vehicles secure as well as handing out leaflets and information packs with advice to preventing burglary.

Sergeant Warren Pitman, from the Lower Valley neighbourhood policing team, said: “Stolen number plates can be used to disguise the identity of the owner and the vehicle involved in crime.

“Replacing the existing screws with the security screw is a simple but highly-effective way to stop this happening to your vehicle.”

Police are planning to offer more security screws and advice on preventing crime at Tesco in Brighouse on Sunday, May 27 between 10am and noon.
