A man was sent to a young offenders’ institution for assaults and escaping police custody.

Luke Fitzgerald, 19, of Doncaster Street, Halifax, also pleaded guilty at Bradford Crown Court to a burglary and causing damage to property.

Prosecuting Giles Bridge said Fitzgerald punched his ex-partner to the ground and then he picked up her phone and smashed it.

He also burgled a house taking mainly electrical equipment valued up to £1,500. The other charges related to another assault on his ex-partner and causing damage to her home.

Peter Hampton, mitigating, said drugs were involved and Fitzgerald went off the rails.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall said: “I am very concerned with a life of prison for you.

“The assaults show you have a real problem with your temper.

He was sentenced to 25 months in a young offenders’ institution. He was also given a further three months for escaping custody and that will run concurrently.

A restraining order was also placed on him banning him from seeing his ex partner.
