Armed police made a series of dramatic arrests in Elland town centre late last night.

Up to a dozen officers carrying guns stopped a car with three men on the Elland Riorges Link road at around 10pm.

The men, aged 25, 26 and 23, were removed from the silver Renault Clio and arrested on suspicion of possessing firearms.

No guns were found in the car but a small amount of class B drug were found.

The trio will be questioned by police in Halifax this morning and enquiries are ongoing.

The West Yorkshire Police helicopter was also on the scene.

Police were originally called to a disturbance on Rye Lane, Pellon, at around 8.45pm, before later making the arrests in Elland.

Resident Joyce Ross, of Brook Street in Elland, saw the drama unfold from her doorstep.

“We were all out watching as it happened,” she said.

“The helicopter was going overhead and the police cars blocked the road and stopped the car. Then they got them out and made them lie in the road while they pointed guns at them.

“It wasn’t like Elland. It was like something you’d see on television.”

Arran Williams, 19, was driving back from Brighouse to his home in Langdale Street in Elland when he saw the police cars.

“There were about three BMWs, two were unmarked, and they forced the Clio into the bus lay by.

“They had them lying in the road for about ten minutes pointing the guns at them,” he said.
