Two men have been charged after an assault in a pub left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

Officers were called to the Tawny Owl pub house on Prospect Road, Ossett, just after midnight on Saturday following reports of a disturbance which left a 24-year-old local man with serious injuries.

The men, Craig Redfearn, 23, of Dewsbury Road, Lupset, and Luke Wright, 20, of Chantry Road, Lupset, will appear at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Monday) charged with assault.

Yesterday, Det Supt Simon Atkinson, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said the victim appeared to have been struck to the side of his head and was knocked unconscious.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he has underwent surgery for a serious head injury and remains in a critical condition.

Det Supt Atkinson said: “CCTV from the premises has been seized as we continue to piece together the circumstances leading to the disturbance.

“This type of violence is rare in what is a friendly community and I would encourage anyone who either witnessed the disturbance or has any information that may assist the investigation to contact police as their evidence could be vital,” he added.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101.
