Vandals and joyriders strike at new Halifax playground site

Workers trying to build a new playground in Halifax have been plagued by vandals and joyriders.

The spree of crime at the construction site behind Forest Cottage and Ovenden RLFC on Cousin Lane in Ovenden, Halifax has happened between last Friday and yesterday.

The culprits have attempted to start several vehicles on the site including a hydraulic excavator and road roller.

The door was forced on the excavator and the ignition barrels on both machines were damaged.

Between Monday and Tuesday this week, the road roller was stolen and driven around the fields and up onto Deanfield Primary School, causing a significant amount of damage to the fencing at the school, the playing fields and the construction site.

The road roller was then sent down the steep embankment from the playing fields towards Page Hill. The machine stopped after crashing into a tree.

The cost of damage to the fencing is believed to be over £1,000 and the roller also has also been extensively damaged.

Anyone with any information about the incidents is asked to contact Sergeant Dionne Stratford at Halifax North and East neighbourhood policing team on 101 or 01422 337300.
