Dramatic CCTV footage captures the moment a masked man, brandishing a machete, was given chase by an Ovenden newsagent.
The video captures the man, as he enters Ovenden Convenience Store threatening employee Mohammed Rafiq with a machete. The brave 24-year-old employee picks up a metal bar - giving chase to the robber.
The incident happened on Sunday, February 16, at 7.30pm at a convenience store on Ovenden Road.
The suspect is described as white, aged in his late 20s, of medium build and wearing a balaclava. He was between 5”10 and 5”11 tall.
The same man is now being linked with an attempted robbery at an Ovenden church on Wednesday.
The second incident happened on Wednesday (February 19) at a church on the same road at 6.50pm.
A man of a similar description entered the church hall where a class was taking place and grabbed a woman’s handbag and tried to make off. He was, however, stopped by a man and a struggle ensued. The man who intervened was left with minor injuries. The other man made off without the handbag along Ovenden Road towards Illingworth.
A man officers want to speak to in connection with this incident is of the same description as the man in the first, although he is described as of a stocky build.
He was wearing a scarf with a check pattern, a green coloured hooded top and grey coloured jogging bottoms.
DS Ross Wadsworth of Calderdale CID, said: “We are potentially looking at the chance these two crimes are linked and I would appeal to any witnesses or anyone who has information about them to contact Calderdale CID on 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111.”
