A woman appeared in court charged with theft and assaulting a PCSO in the line of duty.

Calderdale Magistrates Court was told that 24-year-old Tanya Louise Smith had attacked the male officer on March 7 after he approached her in relation to a bottle of sherry she had stolen from a Spar store in Hebden Bridge on that same day.

Smith – of Rugby Gardens, Ovenden, pleaded guilty to stealing the one bottle of QC Cream Sherry worth £6.39 from the Crown Street retailer and not guilty to assaulting the PCSO – which allegedly took place at King Edward Street in Halifax.

The defendant will stand trial on October 7 and was bailed.
