A Halifax woman stole alcohol from Tesco so that she would be arrested and get a bed for the night, a court heard.
Donna Parkinson, 24, of Lister Court, was stopped by security staff after she entered the King Cross store just before 11pm on 8 September and took a packet of malibu island punch worth £10 from the shelf.
She then went to the toilets and drank some before pouring the rest away. She then tried to leave without paying.
Calderdale Magistrates heard how Parkinson had only been released from prison a few days earlier but had struggled to find a place to live and had fallen back into drug use.
Earlier that night she had been to the police station to ask if she could be arrested because she wanted to return to prison, but had been refused by officers who told her the police station wasn’t a hotel.
Maggie Cavanagh, defending, describe Parkinson’s action as “a cry for help.”
Parkinson pleaded guilty to theft and was given a drug rehabilitation order.
