tHE Mayor of Calderdale tried his hand at plastering when he visited construction students at North Halifax Skills Centre.

Nader Fekri was there to present awards to three top achievers at the Calderdale College construction academy in Club Lane, Ovenden.

British Gypsum Plastering Student of the Year was awarded to Mark Ettenfield for consistently high marks in theory and practical units, along with distinctions at Levels 1 and 2.

The apprentice was described as an excellent role model who had managed to balance work and college commitments.

Grant Bielby and James Jones came in second and third place respectively.

The award for most-improved learner went to Chris McInnes and Ashley Smith received a certificate for 100 per cent attendance.

Plastering lecturer Lance Lucas said: “We are really pleased to have the mayor here to present our learners with their awards.

“All the students have worked incredibly hard over the past year and it is wonderful for others to come to North Halifax Skills Centre to see their achievements.”
