A former Halifax businessman is to become Chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University next year.

Sir Bob Murray CBE was general manager at Gower Furniture based in the town 
during the late 1970s, his affiliation with the area continued in 1990 when he was appointed as a non-executive member of FKI Group, based in Halifax.

A leading businessman in Yorkshire for 43 years, Sir Bob’s best known role was when he was Chairman at Sunderland Football Club.

His connection with the University dates back to 1969 when he moved to Yorkshire to study accountancy, and in 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration by the University for his contribution to business and sport.

Sir Bob said: “As a former graduate and as someone who has worked in Yorkshire for more than 40 years it will be a great honour to take on such a leading role with the University.
