Calderdale schools gain recognition for their healthy eating

Pupils, teachers and caterers enjoyed an afternoon of celebration, with local stakeholders and special guests including The Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Howard Blagbrough, who presented the awards.

Beech Hill Junior and Infant School, Longroyde Junior School, Cragg Vale Primary and St John’s Primary in Rishworth all received their Bronze Awards.

Bolton Brow Primary Academy and Bradshaw Primary both received their Silver Awards and William Henry Smith School received a prestigious Gold Food for Life Award.

Sam Gould, a teacher at Bolton Brow Primary Academy, said: “We are very proud to receive our Food for Life Silver award.

“This ensures our school lunches are freshly prepared and source local, organic ingredients.

“A big thanks to all staff whose continuing hard work made this happen, especially our cook in charge, Rachel Fleming.”

The Food for Life programme has been commissioned by Calderdale Council’s Public Health team due to the positive impact it has on the health and well-being of the children in the borough.

Paul Butcher, Calderdale Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “Building knowledge in schools and communities about how to eat well is a key part of our work to help improve the health and wellbeing of local people.

“It’s great to see Calderdale schools being recognised for their contribution towards transforming food culture.”
