Charity drive to help deaf school

A fundraising campaign is getting underway to help a Halifax-based sign language interpreter realise his dream of helping a deaf school in Sri Lanka.

Andrew Hesselwood, 25, from Holmfield, works across the UK, but now wants to help the wider deaf community.

He will embark on the trip in December and has set a target of £2,000.

He said: “I’m going to Sri Lanka to help maintain and improve a local deaf school, whilst learning about their community and ways of life.”

To help fund the trip, Paul’s Signing Choir, led by Paul Whittaker OBE, is holding an afternoon tea at Norland Junior and Infant School on October 8.

It will run from 2pm until 4pm and donations of raffle prizes, sandwiches and cakes are welcome. Contact Gail Herring on 07855 769 852 if you can help.

Paul’s choir runs on Tuesdays at All Saints’ Church, Elland, from 7.15pm.
