DEAR is a scheme to help young people at Park Lane Learning Trust develop an interest in books.

As well as “Drop Everything And Read”, a new timetable is being introduced which will give every student at the Halifax school the chance to read for 20 minutes every day.

“Reading skills, spelling and comprehension are at the core of all learning improvements, and DEAR will help us to piece together the literacy jigsaw,” said head teacher Steve Taylor.

A student newspaper, The Student Times, is now published every month and “reading buddies” have been recruited.

Teacher Gail Jefferson, said one challenge was to find nearly 1,000 extra books to provide a reading box for every tutor group.

Staff, parents and supporters have been donating books that are virtually new and the school is seeking sponsorship with the help of Business in the Community partner, Marshalls of Southowram.

Last year Park Lane was in the top 1 per cent of improving schools in the country.
