CALDERDALE teachers have begun voting on whether to join a national strike over pensions.
The Government wants to gradually increase teachers’ pension contributions by 50 per cent from April next year.
Failure by the two sides to reach agreement could result in strike action towards the end of June.
“The National Audit Office has confirmed the Teachers’ Pension Scheme is sustainable following the changes made in 2007,” said Sue McMahon, the Calderdale divisional secretary of the NUT. We already contribute a good part of our salary but this Government wants teachers to pay a lot more, work a lot longer and get a lot less for our pensions.
“The NUT is not prepared to stand by and see our pensions eroded.”
