Teachers’ strike could close schools

Members of the National Union Union of teachers have confirmed that they will walk out on strike on July 10, potentially causing closures to schools across the Calderdale district.

The union is protesting against a number of education reforms, including moves by Education Secretary Michael Gove to allow unqualified teachers in the classroom.

Concerned mothers Charlotte Brady and Dot Foster joined hundreds of parents at a national lobby of Parliament, organised by the NUT.

Sue McMahon, divisional secretary of Calderdale NUT, said: “Education is in crisis. And this message was relayed to the MPs for Halifax and Calder Valley by parents and governors.

“The Coalition Government’s policies are damaging education for generations to come.

“We hope following the lobby that MPs will seek to put pressure on the Secretary of State for Education to sit down and listen to the concerns of our profession.”
