STUDENTS at Ravenscliffe High School and have celebrated their newly-found confidence thanks to independent travel.

Since 2000 the school has included travel training in their school day helping give training for increased independence. It has meant students have made their own way to work experience and used the MyBus scheme which now runs three services and transports 50 students each day.

Martin Moorman said: “There is no greater thrill in our school than seeing many of our students, despite significant difficulties travelling to and from school independently”.

Awards have now been presented to students including nine from Ryburn Valley High.

Jason Oldroyd who is based with the council’s Access Team, developed the “Independence in a Month” scheme, which saw students taking time out of their timetable to focus on travelling.

“It’s fantastic to see how the students have flourished in travel,” he said.
