An Elland businesswoman has been appointed the new High Sheriff of West Yorkshire.

Luddenden resident Virginia Lloyd, who was the co-founder of Design and Display Limited in Elland with her husband Clive, was sworn in by Mr Justice Globe at a ceremony in Leeds Crown Court.

Virginia, who is a Patron of Opera North and a Trustee of the Henry Watkinson Trust, said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as High Sheriff of West Yorkshire.

“I plan to spend my year working hard to promote the duties of this historic role of supporting the judiciary and the institutions that work to deliver justice in our area.

“I will do all that I can to support West Yorkshire in any way that is appropriate.”

Virginia becomes only the fourth woman in history to take on the role.

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent non-political Royal appointment for one year. The High Sheriff supports the Crown and the judiciary, while also actively lending support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector.
