THE new incinerator and processing plant designed to get rid of Calderdale household waste should create 80 permanent jobs when it opens in 2016.
There will be another 300 workers involved in building the factory, which will be at Bowling Back Lane, Bradford.
Drawings of how the building will look will go on display at Halifax Central Library on Saturday, March 3, between 10am and 4pm.
Households in Calderdale produce about 78,000 tons of refuse every year.
About 32,000 tons is recycled through doorstep collections and waste recycling sites, and the rest is dumped in tips.
It is this waste which will go to Bradford
Recyclable materials will be removed by mechanical means and the remainder will be burnt to generate electricity for up to 20,000 households.
It will also provide heat for businesses or public buildings in Bradford.
There will be a visitor and education centre to inform students and others about recycling, modern waste treatment technology, energy efficiency and broader sustainability issues.
Pennine Resource Recovery’s project director Mark Tribe said he wanted to ensure people living close to the plant were fully informed about what is being proposed.
“We are keen to receive feedback on our proposals and use the consultation process to address any concerns people might have.
“The facility has been designed specifically for Bradford and Calderdale councils.
“Not only does it represent significant investment in the area, it will also create 300 jobs during construction and 80 new, permanent jobs once operational.”
Calderdale Council is committed to using the energy-from-waste plant for 25 years.
Building it and running it for that period of time will cost about £300 million.
Under the EU Landfill Directive, the amount of waste which is landfilled must be reduced to 35 per cent of that produced in 1995 or councils face a huge rise in landfill taxes.
It is expected to take at least eight years before Calderdale and Bradford benefit financially from the plant, as against paying higher taxes for tipping waste.
