Plea to the council for a garden inspector

Allotment holders want Calderdale Council to pay the expenses of a volunteer to visit council-owned sites and check that roads and fences are kept in a good state of repair.

Calderdale Leisure Gardens Federation was told that there are problems at some sites because the council does not have the money for essential maintenance.

Chairman Rod Mellor told members that work is still underway on creating new allotments at Vickerman Street, in Halifax, at Sandy Gate, Hebden Bridge and Holywell Green.

The federation’s annual competition will take place in the week commencing Monday, July 23, with a maximum of of eight plots at large sites and five at the smaller sites to be judged. The winners presentation evening will be held on September 26 at the Shay Banqueting Suite.
