Take up your oars, it’s time for a paddle

THE River Calder will be the venue for a festival of canoeing and watersports this weekend.

The Pennine Canoe Club, which moved to Sugden’s Mill, Brighouse, from Mirfield this summer, is holding its first major event in the town – the Pennine Paddlefest – on Sunday from 10am-4pm.

There will be taster sessions for people keen to have a go at canoeing as well as slalom and white-water races, a kayak challenge and demonstrations.

Chairman David Jeffries said: “We have been moving canoes and our equipment over to Brighouse and have built new access steps to the river. We hope people will come along and have a go.”

Meanwhile a clear-up of the waterways around Brighouse had to be cancelled.

British Waterways and Calderdale Future hope to reorganise the tidy-up around the Calder and Hebble Navigation.

It is hoped the day, once re-arranged, will be the launch pad for a new regular working party to help care for the canal each month.

The group will help clear weeds from the paved section of towpaths and wash walls.
