An Elland ex-army man has organised a family fun day to raise money for his late friend.

L/Cpl Graham Shaw, 27, met pal Richard Higgins while the pair served with the Yorkshire Regiment in Iraq in 2005.

When Richard left the army, L/Cpl Shaw continued to serve, but was tragically killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan last year.

Richard has since raised several thousands of pounds for Help For Heroes, largely through bike rides, with fellow ex-serviceman Matthew McKinley.

Now the pair have decided to include more people in the fund raising process, and have organised a fun day and bike ride at Pennine Manor Hotel at Scapegoat Hill, Huddersfield, on Sunday.

“There will be lots of games for families to take part in, as well as stalls and some fitness classes like Zumba and boot camp style training,” said Richard, who has also designed three cycle routes for people to try - including a 65 mile bike ride, which begins at 9.30am.

There will also be a raffle with the chance to win a helicopter ride.

“Hopefully we’ll get lots of people down for what should be a really exciting day,” he added.
