Fax v Dewsbury: Easy opening day win for Calland's side
HALIFAX opened their season with a win, easily outpointing Dewsbury in a one-sided Northern Rail Cup game at the Shay.
Matt Calland's side ran out 24-0 winners, a score that would have looked more impressive if kicker Lee Paterson had not missed his first three conversion attempts.
The home side led 8-0 at the break, after an opening half dominated by the whistle of Warrington official Matthew Thomason, who blew for 15 penalties during a stop-start opening.
Fax looked dangerous throughout, but struggled to come up with an end product until substitute Dylan Nash popped a slick pass out to James Haley, who scored in the right corner.
And it was Nash who gave Fax breathing space at the break, racing clear from halfway in the final minute of the half before limping off, apparently with a recurrence of the back injury that has troubled him since the pre season game at St Helens.
It was far more comfortable after the interval, with Haley scoring after 48 minutes leaving Fax leading 12-0.
Paterson and Shad Royston then romped over in quick succession, with Paterson finally finding his kicking boots, to seal a good day's work.
