Fax v Eagles: Penkywicz score seals comeback
A TRY five minutes from time by hooker Sean Penkywicz sealed a miracle comeback and ensured Halifax made a winning start to their Co operative Championship season with a 32-26 success over Sheffield Eagles.
Matt Calland's side, who had already scrapped back from 12-0 down to force a 12-12 half time stalemate, trailed 26-12 early in the second half after two converted Menzie Yere tries, plus a Tangi Ropati penalty, put the visitors in control.
But two tries in two minutes from Shad Royston, who had already claimed one score before the break, closed the gap to two points.
Lee Paterson, who finished with a perfect six from six, then held his nerve to level the scores with a 35 metre penalty 10 minutes from time.
And Penkywicz put the icing on the cake when he capitalised on a quick play the ball from Makali Aizue to put Fax ahead for the first time in the 75th-minute.
Paterson converted and Fax, despite a couple of late scares, held on for victory.
In the first half, Craig Cook and Ashley Thackeray had put Sheffield in front, before scores from Royston and former Eagle Rob Worrincy hauled Fax back into contention.
