FC Halifax Town 3 Skelmersdale Utd 0: Patience the key to win
FC Halifax Town boss Jim Vince was in no doubt about his side's key attribute against Skelmersdale - patience.
Saturday's game at the Shay was goalless at the break, but a quickfire double from Junior Brown and Cavell Coo put Town on the way to a maximum haul.
And Ashley Stott came off the bench to complete the scoring deep into injury time.
"Patience won us the game," said Vince. "There is no point in panicking.
"We just have to play controlled football and we will win games.
"We knew Skelmersdale would be a strong side.
"They played one up front and looking to do us on the counter attack.
"We just had to stay disciplined - and we were.
"The fact that Craig Ellison only had one save to make shows how well we defended, unlike Tuesday at Garforth. We looked compact, we looked tight and the lads at the back did well.
"The quality of our play was good. We looked to pass the ball and move.
"I know it wasn't one-touch, but it was not far off and I was very pleased."
If patience was the key, two goals in four second half minutes finished off the Skelmersdale challenge.
"I swapped Junior and Colin Daniel because I wanted Colin to expose the space in a wider area," said Vince. "Fortunately it worked.
"The first opportunity he got to drive at the full back, he did and it was a good delivery into the box for Junior to capitalise on.
"It took a good move to score a good goal.
"Cavell has been looking to get his first goal for a few weeks. Unfortunately he has not been able to finish off a move. On Saturday he did, with his head, and it was a great goal."
Vince was forced to shuffle his pack when Jon Kennedy went down with food poisoning and Kris King was sent home suffering from a virus.
And they suffered a further blow in the warm-up when Kennedy's replacement Phil Senior suffered a groin strain, handing a first start to third choice stopper Craig Ellison.
"Craig has been with me for the last couple of seasons, but he is still only young," said Vince. "He has a lot of ability and he is going to be a good keeper.
"He is with us because he is looking to progress his career."
FC Halifax Town's President's Cup clash with Sheffield, scheduled for tomorrow night, has been postponed.
The South Yorkshire outfit are involved in an FA Cup third round replay with Guiseley after coming back from three goals down to claim a 3-3 draw at the weekend.
