FC Halifax Town: Baker goal v Wakefield was a cracker
NIGEL Jemson might have taken the headlines with his double in Saturday's 3-2 win over Wakefield, but the goal of the game was scored by Tom Baker.
The midfielder added to his growing reputation with a stunning volley to put the Shaymen 2-0 up in the Unibond One North clash.
And it followed on from an equally impressive strike to give Town the lead in their previous win - 4-1 at Radcliffe before Christmas.
"I probably won't score a tap in because I don't get far enough forward to get one," said Baker.
"I am going to get most of my goals from outside the box."
Baker's joy at scoring was short-lived as Wakefield pulled one back within 60 seconds.
"It was disappointing really after scoring a goal to go 2-0 up that Wakefield scored straightaway," he said.
"They say that when you have just scored it is the most important time to be switched on and make sure you don't concede.
"We made it a bit difficult for ourselves but came through in the end."
The win maintained Town's position at the top of the table but Baker knows that the team have to defend better in the second half of the season if they are to stay there.
"Three points is three points whether it finishes 3-0 or 3-2," he said. "But there is no debating the fact that we need to stop conceding soft goals.
"On Saturday we failed to close down their man for the first one and we should not be conceding from set pieces like we did for the second.
"All three of our goals were good ones.
"After the game on New Year's Day we showed good character to come back to the Shay in front of the home fans and put on a decent performance."
Town will be looking to double up when they entertain Radcliffe on Saturday and Baker is looking forward to the clash.
"We will be going into the game with a bit of confidence now," he said. "We had a good win over them a couple of weeks ago and we need to push on now."
Back up keeper Phil Senior is set to leave the Shay with Ossett Albion his likely destination.
The former Huddersfield stopper's season has been blighted by a groin injury and he has started just three games - the last against Albion in the President's Cup in September.
"Because Phil is a non contract player we cannot funds his wages," said boss Jim Vince.
"He is continuing his rehabilitation and there has been notice of approach from a club for him. Whatever Phil wants to do we will support him in that."
TOWN'S Unibond One North clash with Harrogate Railway at the Shay has been brought forward from February 10 to February 7.
