FC Halifax Town: Barnes ready to go home

MICHAEL Barnes admits facing his hometown club on Saturday, when the Shaymen go to Chorley, will be 'weird'.

The young winger, who arrived at Halifax midway through the season, has played at Victory Park before - but that was for the Magpies' second team.

The Chorley-born 20-year-old has never played a senior game at the stadium and is looking forward to it.

"I played for Chorley's reserves but never the first team," he said.

"And it will be the first time I have been back to play there since.

"It is not that far from where I live and it will be weird."

Barnes has been in and out of the Halifax side since arriving from Southport and was handed his first start under caretaker boss Nigel Jemson last weekend against Trafford - as a striker.

"I had been waiting for a start and Nigel asked me if I fancied playing up front," he said.

"I have played there before so said yes straight away.

"I got on and got a goal, so it went well.

"It is tricky when you are not playing, but you have to try to take the chances when they come along.

"I was asked to do a job, did it and hopefully I can play again this week."

His target is to try to help the Shaymen to victory on the final day, even if it is too late to help them achieve their aim of reaching the play offs.

"We have had some good performances but not had the rub of the green in many games," he said.

"We want to go out with a bang and get the win at Chorley."

The first of the season's Halifax AFL cup finals takes place at Natty Lane tomorrow (6.0) when first division Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves meet division lower Siddal Athletic Reserves in the AMA Trading Invitation Cup.
