FC Halifax Town: Halifax are going places - Smith
JONATHAN Smith only put pen to paper on his FC Halifax Town contract on Tuesday.
But he cannot wait for the new season to start as the reformed club begins its bid to climb the football pyramid.
Smith featured in last weekend's final pre-season friendly win at Ossett Albion and impressed onlookers with a display that belied the fact that he is still only 19.
And he was blown away by the turn out for the club's open day last Sunday which confirmed the support the new team has in the area.
"We are definitely ready for it," said Smith. "And the supporters showed at the open day last weekend that they are ready.
"Everyone wants to get going again.
"The squad is already close, it is great to be involved and we are all looking forward to the season starting."
Like so many of the players Jim Vince has brought to the club in the past six weeks or so, Smith is attack-minded.
And in common with his manager, he is a player who likes to get the ball on the floor and play.
"I know he is a football-based man, who likes his team to work hard and pass the ball," said Smith.
"I love playing football and that's one reason I am looking forward to it.
"It is definitely a footballing pitch.
"The club is going places and I am just excited to be part of it."
Despite never having played under Vince, Smith has been in contact with his new boss for more than 12 months.
And the Town chief has lived up to the expectations Smith had of him before signing.
"Jim's influence on me was a massive reason in coming here," said Smith.
"I have been speaking to him for over a year and he has been a massive help.
"I have been impressed with him so far and I am looking forward to working with him through the season."
The capture of Smith is a real coup for Vince, the player having played in the Scottish Premier League last season with Aberdeen.
And Town fans are in for a treat if Smith is able to put into practice what he learned at Pittodrie.
"Hopefully I can bring the experience I gained in Scotland here and it will show," he said.
