FC Halifax Town: Town missed their chance

TOWN threw away the chance of promotion from Unibond One North at the first attempt.

That is the view of midfielder Tom Baker as the Shaymen prepare for the final game of the season at Chorley on Saturday.

Town went to the top of the table in November during a seven-game winning run.

But their form dipped and in the past couple of months was sufficiently poor for manager Jim Vince to lose his job.

Caretaker Nigel Jemson was unable to arrest the slide and their final hope disappeared with last weekend's 2-2 draw at home to Trafford.

"It is a case of too many missed opportunities," said Baker. "We got ourselves right up there and threw it away with a terrible run in the last 15 games or so.

"We then got another opportunity on Easter Monday against Curzon Ashton and threw it away again.

"You have to take your chances in football. If you don't you will get nowhere.

"The season has reached a point where there isn't anything to play for.

"And not getting the points on Monday was the story of the season.

"If we could have won it would have at least kept it going into the final week."

Baker is battling to be fit for the weekend trip to Chorley due to a back problem.

And, with Paul Evans and Damien Allen suspended for the trip to Victory Park, Jemson will be hoping the former Park Avenue man makes it.

"I am struggling big time," he said. "I had sciatica a couple of years ago and it does come back from time to time.

"It probably doesn't help that I am the only central midfielder available for Saturday."

TICKETS are available for FC Halifax Town's end of season awards night on Sunday, May 3, at the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top.

They are priced at 19 which includes a two course meal, comedy from Martin Gold and the guest speaker is ex Manchester City player Steve Daley.
