FC Halifax Town v Retford United: Shaymen looking for win tonic in cup clash
TONIGHT'S game against Unibond One South high flyers Retford United at the Shay may be seven days late due to the weather, but Town's objectives will be the same - to get back on track.
And, if anything, the need to do just that is greater this evening than it was last Tuesday when the game was frozen off.
Saturday's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Rossendale was a bitter pill to swallow for boss Jim Vince and his players.
The Shaymen dominated proceedings but somehow contrived to miss more than a dozen chances while the Lancashire side took two of their three.
It was remarkable how the game mirrored the one between the sides three weeks earlier when Town could have been out of sight yet lost 1-0.
While the seven-match winning run in the league that took them to the summit is still fresh in the memory, confidence ought not to have been dented too much by the recent blip.
But the longer any side goes without a win, the more anxiety can creep into their play and the Shaymen could do with a little pick-me-up ahead of their pre-Christmas trip across the Pennines to Radcliffe Borough on Saturday.
Results at the weekend - a draw for Bamber Bridge and defeat for Ossett Albion - were kind to Vince's side even if they re-inforced the feeling of a real chance missed against Rossendale.
But they have to regain control of their own destiny immediately and a win tonight would be a start.
Retford have not played since tonight's game was first due to have been played with their game against Brigg Town at the weekend falling to a waterlogged pitch.
That could well work against Halifax if the visitors decide to play a stronger than expected side ahead of next weekend's return to league action against struggling Leek.
Like Town, Retford's chief aim this term is promotion and they are currently second in the table, one point behind leaders Carlton Town with three games in hand.
While both sides' main focus is firmly on what happens in their respective divisions, both will be striving for victory tonight.
