FC Halifax Town v Rossendale United: Battling win for Shaymen
FC Halifax Town 2 Rossendale United 0
Goals from James Dean and Mark Peers gave Town an important victory in tricky conditions at the Shay.
Boss Neil Aspin was without Steve Payne through injury, James Riley coming into the centre of defence to partner skipper Ryan Crossley.
Tom Baker had a shot from distance inside the opening minute but it was a generally slow start in tricky conditions.
Town should have taken the lead after 10 minutes, but Scott Phelan's close range effort was saved by United keeper Tom Brocklehurst who had just kept out a Richard Marshall effort.
Harry Winter sent a low shot wide of the target but chances were at a premium and Brocklehurst was put under more pressure from a Harry Bockarie back pass than anything the Shaymen could muster as the game entered its second quarter
Marshall's 31st minute cross was put behind for acorner while the same man flicked a header into the keeper's arms as Town continued to dominate without ever really threatening.
James Dean latched onto a Winter pass five minutes after the break only to be denied buy the keeper's legs.
And the big striker rose well to meet a Nicky Gray cross from the right but could not get his header on target.
Mark Peres and Andrew Lee were sent in just 11 minutes after the break as Aspin looked for pace and width.
The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute when Lee was brought down by Ibraham Abdirashid and Dean fired home from the spot.
Town doubled their advantage 10 minutes later, Lee pulling the ball back from the left and, after a Dean effort had been blocked, Peers fired home.
Gray missed an injury time penalty, Brocklehurst saving after he had brought down the Town man and escaped with only a yellow card.
