FC Halifax Town v Sheffield FC: Shaymen's last chance for knockout success
HAVING hit the top of the Unibond One North table at the weekend, Town turn their attention to their one remaining chance of knockout success this season when they entertain Sheffield FC in the second round of President's Cup tonight.
Defeat in each of their last three cup ties has not affected league form in any way - Saturday's win at Woodley Sports was their sixth in a row.
But while manager Jim Vince has kept a fairly settled side in the league games, he has made changes for the cups.
And it is likely that he will keep a couple of players back tonight with a big home game against Chorley at the weekend.
That will mean rare starts for the likes of Danny Ellis, Kris King and Luke Hinsley, all of whom were on the bench at the weekend and would benefit from a 90 minute run out.
Town reached the second round of the competition with a 4-3 win at Ossett Albion when their two-goal hero was substitute Danny Davidson.
Ellis also bagged his only Town goal in one of only two starts he has made with Nigel Jemson bagging the other.
Sheffield are hardly pulling up any trees in Unibond One South this season although their league position is slightly misleading.
They currently lie in 17th place but have up to six games in hand on the teams above them.
The main reason for that was their impressive run in the FA Cup where they reached the fourth qualifying round before losing 3-1 to Blyth Spartans on the verge of a crack at a League side.
They returned to league action at the weekend when they won 2-0 at Kidsgrove.
That took them to four wins and a draw from their eight league outings.
The fact that the South Yorkshire side already have a backlog of fixtures - much like Durham City in Unibond One North - may see them make a few changes to their side.
But players will be keen to impress and both teams will be mindful of the fact that success breeds success and that being the case it should be a decent contest.
The winners of this evening's game - which will be decided tonight - will entertain Retford United in the third round of the competition on Tuesday, December 9.
