FC Halifax Town v Silsden: Early taste of FA Cup action for Shay faithful
THE Shay will host an FA Cup preliminary round clash for the first time ever when FC Halifax Town face Silsden tomorrow.
The old Town club twice played in first qualifying round games with the 1997-98 clash with Droylsden being played at home.
Just 12 months earlier they had travelled to Oldham Town at the same stage.
But despite their earlier than usual start, they will keen to make progress with the prospect of basking in a little knockout limelight on the horizon.
Silsden will be hoping for the same thing.
And they already have an FA Cup win under their belts this season.
The day before Town made their debut in the Unibond League, Silsden were beating Eccleshill 4-1 at Cougar Park in an extra-preliminary round tie.
And that win certainly did them some good.
They had lost their opening two league matches, but since the cup success have won twice and in their last three games have scored 10 goals.
Town enjoyed limited success in the FA Cup in the previous 10 years with a couple of second round and a couple of first round appearances the best they could manage.
And that was from a starting point of the fourth - and final - qualifying round.
This season just getting through to the final game before the League One and Two clubs enter the competition would be a major bonus.
And to get through that would be out of this world.
It is not impossible, though, for a Unibond League One side to do it - just ask the fans of Harrogate Railway who got through to the second round of the competition last season.
There are many hurdles to get over before Town can start dreaming about success of that magnitude.
And they will have to ensure they are on their mettle against their North West Counties Premier Division neighbours tomorrow.
If they take their eyes off the game in hand, they can forget about any glory in the coming months.
