FC Halifax Town v Trafford: Town supporters show they care
ANYONE who wondered at the start of the season whether there was an appetite in Halifax for professional football following the demise of the old club in the summer need look no further than the attendance statistics for the opening nine home games of the season.
FC Halifax Town, despite their lowly league status, are the 22nd-best supported club outside the Football League.
The usual suspects - Oxford United, Wrexham and FC United of Manchester are among the teams that attract most home support outside the top four English divisions.
But the Shaymen are averaging a healthy 1,175 for home games this term and that ranks them above Blue Square premier clubs Salisbury City, Histon, Weymouth, Forest Green Rovers, Northwich Victoria, Lewes and Grays Athletic.
Grays are only managing to pull in an average of 681 for home league games and are ranked a full 20 places below Town in the attendance table.
The Shaymen are second only to FC United in the whole of the Unibond League, making them better supported than Boston United who were also demoted in the summer.
And when you consider that the second best supported club in Unibond One North is Colwyn Bay, with an average of 282, Town's stats become even more impressive.
Town's pulling power is all the more remarkable when you consider the almost complete lack of travelling support in Unibond One North.
Of course there will be people who have attended games at the Shay this season for curiosity value, but the vast majority are the club's die hard fans - and they deserve every credit for their continued support.
A winning side clearly helps and the recent good run in the league did much to raise spirits around the club.
But the boost to the coffers cannot be underestimated as the Shaymen bid to return to former haunts as quickly as possible.
An equally impressive indicator of the support FC Halifax Town have is are the figures for the sides they have travelled to so far.
In each of the eight away games Town have played, season's best home crowds have been achieved.
The crowd of 648 at Rossendale was the biggest by almost 550 while the 601 at Curzon Ashton was almost 450 better than anything before or since in the league.
