FC Halifax Town v Wakefield: Shaymen bidding for a knockout success

FC Halifax Town continue their marathon run of knockout matches tonight when they entertain fellow Unibond League Division One North outfit Wakefield FC in the League Cup.

It will be the second of four successive cup ties for the Shaymen who have a 50 per cent record from the opening two.

Unfortunately, the one they lost was the big one - at Nantwich Town at the weekend.

And their second half frailties were again evident for all to see after they had matched their Unibond Premier hosts for the first 45 minutes before capitulating 4-1.

It was a poor effort after the break as Town managed just a couple of efforts on goal, both from set pieces, while Nantwich were able to create enough chances to miss several and still score three times.

Ironically, the side that featured in the 4-3 win at Ossett Albion in the President's Cup seven days ago did well in the second half, scoring three goals and holding off a late rally by the home side.

Manager Jim Vince is likely to make several changes again this evening in a bid to give some of the peripheral players an opportunity to shine and with one eye on Saturday's FA Trophy trip to Harrogate Railway.

Like Town, Wakefield crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend, losing 3-0 to Blue Square North outfit Fleetwood at College Grove.

And perhaps not surprisingly, the reports of the game suggest that the West Yorkshire side were outclassed for long periods by Micky Mellon's men.

It was Wakefield's first home defeat of the campaign, but their away form has been poor this season with just one win on the road at struggling Harrogate Railway to show for their efforts.

They lost their away first three league games - at Durham, Rossendale and Clitheroe - without managing to score a goal.

And following their win over Railway they went to Curzon Ashton where they lost 2-1 despite taking a first-half lead.
