Fears for safety have forced a Halifax gym to close its doors on members and staff after 16 years.

Fitness First members and staff have been second guessing whether their gymnasium would re-open after it was forced to close, December 19.

But on January 10, Fitness First issued the statement: “We apologise for the uncertainty surrounding Fitness First Halifax and delay in providing you an update on the club status whilst considering our options.

“Unfortunately, due to current circumstances we have taken the difficult decision to remain closed and have entered into discussions with other operators interested in taking over the Halifax site.”

It is understood the sudden closure is in connection with a baseball attack on a 33-year-old man in Hopwood Lane, Halifax, after he was followed home when he left the Dean Clough gym on December 17.

Members and staff were given no real explanation into the sudden closure.

Fitness First cleaner Mia Matthews previously posted on the gym’s Facebook page: “...I can’t even get hold of my supervisor to ask what’s going on - to see whether I still have a job or not.”
