Halifax firefighters were called to Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club, Walton Street, last night to rescue a stranded man.

The 36-year-old was making his way home when he was caught out by the rising waters.

The river that runs alongside the ground had burst its banks and covered the outfield completely.

Firefighters got a call from the man at around 12.30am and had two of them had wade through five foot deep water in drysuits to rescue him.

He was taken to hospital for precautionary checks as he had been in cold water for some time.
