Firefighters tackled a blaze in a derelict high rise block of flats in Mixenden last night (Thursday).

Crews from Illingworth, Halifax, Fairweather Green, Odsal and an aerial appliance from Bradford were called to Dodge Holme Court at around 6.45pm.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said flames were shooting from the windows of the fifth floor when they arrived.

Initially it was believed that the blaze had broken out in the lift motor room, but when crews entered the building they found burning waste and rubbish.

The whole of the fifth floor was involved in the fire and three large jets, four breathing apparatus and two positive pressure ventilation fans were used at the scene.

Crews left at around 9pm.
