GREEN-FINGEREd groups in Calderdale have swept the plot at the Yorkshire in Bloom awards.

More than twenty groups and organisations from Calderdale were recognised at the annual awards from villages and allotment groups through to shopping centres.

Manor Heath park was joint winner of the Public Park award. Halifax won the Yorkshire in Bloom Environmental Quality award trophy and Old Mill Grove were recognised in the Community Award category for their part in the main Halifax entry.

Malcolm Silkstone from Baliff Bridge Community Assocation was named a community champion for his hard work.

Mill Bank was winner in the small village category and the Woolshops won best shopping centre.

Sowerby Bridge won silver in the Urban Communities category.

Sheila Tordoff was at the ceremony to collect the awards.

“We’re delighted,” she said.

She praised the work of businessess, Calderdale Council, the Canal Basin and the town’s churches.

“I’ll be coming back with pride,” said Mrs Tordoff.

The award will be displayed in town once it returns.

Mayor Nader Fekri said he was “absolutely delighted” with the results.

“The quality of the entrants’ successes that they have managed is through dedication, hard work and horticultural artistry.

“It really shows the communities to their best from the smallest village to the biggest towns like Halifax,” he said.

Altogether there were 261 entrants including 38 schools and universities.

Results:

Small village: Mill Bank, gold.

Large village: Ripponden, silver gilt.

Urban community: Elland, silver; Sowerby Bridge, silver

Town: Brighouse, silver; Todmorden; silver gilt.

Large town/small city: Halifax, silver gilt

Charities: Overgate Hospice, Elland, silver.

Public houses and restaurants: The White Horse, Sowerby Bridge, silver.

Visitor Attraction: Manor Heath Nurseries, Halifax.

Large business premises: Friends of Sowerby Bridge railway station, silver gilt.

Shopping centres and retail parks: Woolshops shopping centre, Halifax, gold. Category winner.

It’s your neighbourhood: Barkisland in Bloom, thriving; Mytholmroyd Station Partnership, thriving; Old Mill Grove Gardening club, outstanding.

Young People’s Award: Christ Church school, Sowerby Bridge, Silver; Ravenscliffe High School, gold; Warley Road Primary School, bronze.

Environmental Quality award trophy: Joint winners, Halifax.

Community award: Old Mill Grove

Public park winers: Manor Heath, Halifax

Community champions: Malcolm Silkstone, Baliff Bridge Community Association
