Football: Crossleys off to a swift start
CROSSLEY Swifts under nines got their 2008-2009 campaign underway with a 3-1 victory at Beacon Rangers.
Beacon were quick out of the blocks and Swifts defence of Matthew Gavan and Connor Richardson had to be on top of their game while keeper Thomas Garling was in inspirational form.
Beacon took the lead against the run of play although Crossleys went close just before the break when Jamie Sykes's through ball found Nial Armstrong and his drive from outside the area clipped the bar.
Crossleys came out strongly after the break and Matthew Gavan passed to Nial Armstrong who ran down the right and slotted the ball under the keeper.
Crossleys took the lead when Connor Richardson found Butterfield. His through ball picked out Halsworth who fired home.
Crossleys sealed the game minutes from time when Gavan won the ball and passed to Nial Armstrong who squared for Mason Butterfield to slot home.
The second game was a close fought encounter with Beacon earning a 1-0 win.
Beacon took the lead midway through the first half with a well worked goal.
Crossley went in search of the equaliser after the break and Euan Geleziunas hit the post and fired inches wide. Crossley nearly levelled close to the end when Sykes saw his shot hit the side-netting.
Crossleys hosted Hebden Bridge Whites with the visitors scraping a 3-2 win.
Hebden opened the scoring with an own goal from a George Standring cross. Further Saints pressure paid off when Jake Bogaki doubled the lead.
Crossleys hit back in the second half when Lewis Lynch slid a ball through to Gavan and his pass found Armstrong who fired home.
Hebden went 3-1 up against the run of play when Bogaki grabbed his second of the game.
Crossleys pulled one back when Connor Richardson took the ball from a Thomas Garling throw and passed to Geleziunas. His ball found Armstrong and he smashed the ball home.
The second game saw Hebden win at a canter, the 5-1 victory coming courtesy of goals from George Thompson (3), George Standring and Jake Bogaki.
Crossleys scored a consolation when Lewis Lynch and Sykes set up Gueleziunas to fire in at the back post.
Greetland Gold were 1-0 winners in an entertaining game against Halifax Irish Whites.
Irish were grateful for strong defending from Luke Bradley and Kyle Helliwell before they went close through Jack Chesters and Brandon Jackson.
James Langley in the Irish goal made a smart save and Corey Budgen cleared the danger.
Jackson went close to putting Chesters through but he was halted by a superb tackle. Chesters also shot just wide and Matthew Crowther brought two good saves from the Greetland keeper.
The game got even better in the second half with early chances for Crowther, Chesters and Brandon McGibbon. Greetland put Irish under pressure and scored the only goal which was a scrappy one as Irish fell asleep at a corner.
Irish ended the game on the attack with Jackson beating the goalie but his shot hit the post with Chesters hitting the same post from the rebound.
He also flashed a header over the bar before the final chance fell to Matthew Crowther but his stinging shot hit the side-netting.
