Football - Halifax Ziggy's Spice House League: Red Star in no mood to give up their title

REIGNING champions Hebden Royd Red Star signalled their title intentions with an emphatic 5-0 win at Ryburn United last week.

That took them to within a point of joint leaders Greetland and Stainland United, who have played one and three games more respectively.

Next up for Red Star is a trip to West Vale to take on Halifax Irish Centre.

The hosts, after going so close with a title challenge last season, have failed to win this time in four outings.

There is little to suspect that will change against a Red Star side that even at this early stage of the season look the side to beat.

Greetland are on FA Cup duty which gives Stainland United the chance to go clear at the top.

Mick Severn's men host Shelf United who have only one point to show from their opening three games. It could be closer than the league table suggests.

Sowerby United have found form in their last three games but face a tough test at Elland United while Warley Rangers host Siddal Athletic in a meeting of sides desperate to kick start their seasons.

Both were expected to make a big show this season, but up to now it has not materialised.

The first division title race is pointing towards a fight between leaders Holmfield, Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves and Calder 76.

Holmfield entertain Mixenden United, who have found goals hard to come by and that alone makes Holmfield look like home bankers.

Northowram suffered a heavy defeat at Denholme last week and could be facing another unhappy afternoon when they travel to Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves.

Salem host Stump Cross and it will be hard to separate the sides.

Sowerby Bridge took over at the top of the second division on goal difference from Kingston FC and Halifax Irish Centre Reserves.

The Bridge host Copley United and look set to win again against a side with what looks like a suspect defence.

Kingston face a tough game at fourth placed Elland Allstars and could be happy to avoid defeat while Halifax Irish Centre Reserves travel to an Engineers side still looking for its first win.

Siddal Athletic Reserves look sure to be involved in the title race and should see off any threat posed by Warley Rangers Reserves.

Ryburn United Reserves’ meeting with Junction could be a close affair, but Shelf United Reserves should be too strong for Stainland United Reserves.

The top two clash in the third division with second placed AFC Crossleys hoping to make home advantage count against leaders Volunteer Arms.

Third placed Luddenden Foot Reserves will have too much strength for Salem Reserves.

The vastly improved Sowerby Bridge Reserves could win again when they visit Midgley United Reserves.

Sowerby United Reserves enjoyed their first win of the season last week and will be hoping for more of the same against Calder 76 Reserves.

Wadsworth United host Denholme United Reserves and should win.

In the first round of the Albert Crabtree Saturday Cup, third division side Halifax Athletic face a stiff task when they travel to Brighouse Town.

Town are expected to include Tom Wright for the first time after an 18-month injury lay-off along with Dave Phelps and Danny Bentley.

The tie of the round is at Calder 76 where top flight Greetland are the visitors.

Luddenden Foot should have a straight forward task at Martins Nest and Midgley United should not have too many problems at Brighouse OB.

A minute’s silence will be held before tomorrow’s games as a mark of respect for Laurie Lord.
