Football - West Riding County Amateur League: Ovenden enjoy derby success

A BIG crowd at sunlit Natty Lane saw Ovenden West Riding take the derby honours with a 4-2 victory over Halifax Irish Centre.

Seeking their sixth away win on the trot, Mark Duffy's Ovenden were quickly into their stride and Steve Fullard and Ciaren Green putting the visitors two up after 10 minutes.

They remained in control but Irish gained a foothold and after a good spell of pressure Steve Galloway pulled a goal back when he finished from close range.

The visitors should have restored the two goal cushion but Andy Gregory squandered a great chance on 50 minutes and five minutes later Micky Palethorpe missed a penalty.

Ovenden were then reduced to 10 men when Chris Gent was dismissed on the hour, and Galloway made them pay for those earlier missed chances when he levelled for Irish on 70 minutes with a great header.

But the visitors were not finished and Palethorpe's corner was so vicious it forced Matthew Banks into an own goal to restore Ovenden's lead, and Palethorpe added a fourth in the closing minutes to seal the win.

Ovenden WR begin their West Riding County Challenge Cup campaign tonight with a trip to Pontefract Collieries Reserves (7.45) a game brought forward from next Saturday at the home team's request.

After an encouraging display against leaders Bay seven days earlier, Brighouse Town suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat at Hall Green United having been in front at the break.

Glen Hall and Jason Tiplady struck to put Town 2-1 ahead, with John Moore replying for the home side.

But Brighouse failed to make any impression in the second half and goals from Danny Milne and Chris Turner gave Hall Green the points.

"Even though we were in front at half time we did not look to be on form," said Paul Moore. “In the second half Hall Green came at us and deserved their win.

“It was a real disappointment after the way we had played against Bay the week before.

“Our side has a lot of young lads and it looked like they thought they had done the hard work in the previous match.”

Jamie Fradgley was the only Brighouse player to really catch the eye in a poor performance.

The dismal early season form of Ovenden West Riding Reserves continued with a 4-2 defeat at Wakefield City Reserves.

Over-elaborate build up play and choosing the wrong option was punished by Marcus Bond who put the home side ahead on 10 minutes and on 20 minutes, the hosts’ long ball tactics paid off Bond added a second.

Jason Cartlidge and James Machon strived hard to get their side back into the game but poor marking at a corner just before the break allowed Dean Ambler a simple chance to make it 3-0 and he made no mistake.

It was four soon after the break when Andy Parker was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul in the box and Danny Giles dispatched the penalty.

Ovenden reshuffled and it paid dividends as Machon pulled one back and almost reduced the deficit further only to hit the bar.

A Chris Woodhouse 25 yarder in the dying minutes did eventually reduce the arrears to 4-2, but by then it was too late to make a difference.
